Mrs. Payne

For the last 20 years I have been teaching at the middle school level. My professional experience also includes working as a vocalist with my husband, Huron’s band director, and teaching private voice and piano lessons in our own store in Lake Orion.

In 2016 I joined Huron Academy as an enhancement teacher of drama, choir and piano returning to my earlier roots of musical and theatrical performance.  This year, I will return to teaching core subjects:  math, social studies and language arts, in addition to piano, choir and drama.

I have found that middle school students thrive on relationships and respond well to positive interactions. Having fun, letting your hair down, and sharing personal experiences with them builds those relationships. On the other side, getting to know students’ likes and talents creates a connection that allows a teacher to push a student to greater heights than would otherwise be possible.  To foster those connections, I use teams for collaborative learning which encourages mutual interdependence and full participation.

My “Love and Logic” classroom empowers students to make choices which build internalized control and self-responsibility.  In my classroom, I will treat you with respect, so you will know how to treat me. Feel free to do anything that does not cause a problem for anyone else. If you cause a problem, I will ask you to solve it. If you can’t solve the problem, or choose not to, I will do something. What I do will depend on the person and the situation.  If you feel something is unfair, whisper to me, “I’m not sure that’s fair,” and we’ll talk about it.

It is my goal to provide engaging instruction, that challenges critical thinking skills, fosters intelligent discussion, and develops academic skills, college bound or not. I can promise the best of myself for your son or daughter each and every day.

I value our stakeholders, students and parents alike. Therefore, I welcome your comments and suggestions.
