Finalists announced for MI Charter School Administrator and Teacher of the Year awards

Ten outstanding educators from across Michigan have been honored as finalists for the Michigan Charter School Teacher of the Year and Administrator of the Year awards. The semifinalists were announced two weeks ago, and following a very tough judging process, the finalists are being announced today.

There are 296 charter schools in Michigan, and over 600 nominations were received for this year’s awards.

The finalists for the 2019 Michigan Charter School Teacher of the Year award:

• Jill Carbone, an English teacher at Summit Academy North Middle School, in Romulus.
• Joel Hockin, a science teacher at University Preparatory Academy Science + Math Middle School, in Detroit.
• Valmire McGerty, a social studies teacher at Michigan Math and Science Academy, in Warren.
• Jennifer Melero, a kindergarten teacher at Holly Academy, in Holly.
• Jayme McWain, a psychology teacher at Grand River Preparatory High School, inGrand Rapids.

The finalists for the 2019 Michigan Charter School Administrator of the Year award:

• Kerri Barrett, West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science, Grand Rapids.
• Ali DuBois, Muskegon Montessori Academy for Environmental Change, Muskegon
• Constance Price, Martin Luther King Jr. Education Center Academy, Detroit
• Mark Talbot, Huron Academy, Sterling Heights
• Koree Woodward, Grand River Preparatory High School, Grand Rapids

You’ll find the most talented educators anywhere in the country at Michigan’s charter schools, and these finalists represent the best of the best when it comes to innovation, accountability and outstanding student achievement,” said MAPSA President Dan Quisenberry. “Each of these teachers and school leaders are helping their students enjoy meaningful success, both in the classroom and beyond.”

Each finalist will be featured in a video series on MAPSA’s Facebook page opens in a new window from April 22 – May 3, and will be honored at the State Capitol later this month. The winners of the 2019 Michigan Charter School Administrator of the Year and Teacher of the Year awards will then be announced in early May.
