Volume 4, Issue 4

Dear Huron Academy Families,

I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving break last week. Our staff attended a professional development conference for two days that covered a wide array of topics that will help us continue to stay at the forefront of all of the new ideas, initiatives, programs, and opportunities that are out there in the world of K-12 education.

One of the sessions we attended focused on student discourse and student discussions, and the conversation got me thinking about students having a voice in schools. I’m proud that our team has put together a “Community Council” made up of representatives from each house and grade level. Students gave speeches and engaged in the democratic process by voting for their preferred representatives. It was remarkable to see how passionate and thoughtful the student speeches were, and I hope to see more such opportunities to see students share their opinions, beliefs, and ideas in a constructive manner. Over the holiday break, try to get more out of conversations with your children than normal. Not only will it strengthen familial bonds, but it will also boost their confidence in feeling free to express themselves and explore new ideas – which, in turn, will improve academic performance of our kids!

Speaking of expressing themselves, our students have a number of opportunities to express themselves at holiday concerts and events for the month of December. These events will be fun for the whole family, so we hope to see you all there to celebrate the holiday cheer.

Finally, I want to touch upon some of our parking lot logistics, as a number of questions have been brought to my attention:

  • The new placards should speed up dismissal time, but everything else will remain the same procedurally
  • Although Utica Rd is now open both ways, exiting the parking lot is still right turn only
  • We are going to be laying gravel down and grading the back lot throughout the winter, and while some red tape has prevented the paving from being done this fall, it’s looking like it will be done no later than early spring.

As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out with any thoughts/concerns/ideas. I hope to see you at some of our holiday events, and if not, I wish you all a happy holiday season and happy new year!

Sincerely,

Joshua Sobczak,
Superintendent
